Dr. John M.
Anderson was
born and
educated in Toronto. He received a Bachelor of Science in Forestry, and
a Ph.D.
in animal physiology, both from the University of Toronto. He joined the Biology Department of the
University of New Brunswick in 1958, and spent the better part of his
career in
New Brunswick, mostly in Charlotte County. He was appointed Director of
the DFO
Biological Station in St. Andrews in 1967, where he founded the
Huntsman Marine
Science Centre. He moved back to Fredericton in 1973 as President and
Vice-Chancellor of UNB. His research interests have focused on fish,
mostly
Atlantic salmon, so it was a natural move after his UNB presidency to
return to
St. Andrews to join the Atlantic Salmon Federation where he became
Chief
Scientist and Vice-President Operations.
He retired in
1997, but continues
to remain active in the fields of research and salmon conservation. His
current
activities include the ASF, the Canadian Executive Services Organization, the HMSC, the Canadian Nature
Conservancy, the Mackenzie King scholarships, the McCain Group
scholarships,
and the Madawaska Maliseet First Nation.
He has six
children and eight
grandchildren, and lives in St. Andrews with his wife, Sylvia.
Mr. Rick Bryce was born and raised in
Hamilton,Ontario. He was employed for thirty years by American Can and
then
Ball Corporation in the metal container industry. His travels took him
to
plants in Hamilton and
Burlington,
Ontario, Vancouver , British Columbia, Columbus, Ohio and Weirton, West
Virginia. In 1999 Rick accepted the position of General Manager, Can
and Cover
Division for Connors Bros. Ltd. of Blacks
Harbour.Rick,
his wife Val and their three children, Erin, Thomas and Jamie moved to
a
beautiful home overlooking the ocean on the Harkness Road in Chamcook.
Over the
years, Rick has been the president of a local Ontario credit union and
has been
on the Board of Directors of the St.Andrews Arts Council. He has
coached the
Boys Basketball team at Sir James Dunn Academy for the last four
years.When he
is
not
assisting his active wife in her drama pursuits,he enjoys all sports,
particularly golf and walking his dog, Bandit.With Erin's recent move
to
Calgary and Thomas's move to Toronto,Rick will get to enjoy another of
his
passions-travel.
Mr. Andrew
Daggett was born and raised on Grand Manan Island and has lived
there
all his life except for the time spent at Mount Allison University
getting
a BSc with a major in Psychology. Andy is very happily married to his
beautiful
wife Tara who is finishing her Masters of Marine Biology and has
recently
started a job with Sweeney International.
Prior
to his current position as Village Manager, Andy worked construction
(heavy
equipment), worked in the woods (have chainsaw, will travel) and drove
tractor trailer, specializing in the hauling of live fish. Outside of
his
duties as Village manager, Andy sits on the Board for CBDC, is a member
of the committee for the Grand Manan/Loos Islands Twinning Project, is
a deacon, moderator, and Sunday School teacher in his church, and is a
Rotarian.
Leisure
activities include sports (basketball, baseball, golf), gardening,
hunting
(mostly bow hunting), and spending time with his wife.
Ms. Jessie
Davies is a new resident of St. Andrews. For the last five
years
she has been working on projects in Vietnam and China on sustainable
development.
She is Director of Enivironment and Sustainable Development at the
University
of New Brunswick, a member of the Premier's Round Table on Environment
and Economy, on the Board of the Huntsman Marine Science Centre, served
on the Joint Public Review Panel for the Sable Gas Project, the New
Brunswick
Electricity Market Design Committee, the stakeholders Committee on
Protected
Areas etc. In times when she is not sitting ...she enjoys
kayaking,
gardening, travel and walking her dog, Maggie. Huw and Jessie
have
two children, Rhiannon (an engineer living in Amsterdam) and Llewellyn
(a boat designer and teacher living in Bristor Rhode Island.
Jessie
did her undergraduate work at Cornell University and her Masters at
Cambridge.
She is past president and a Honorary Trustee of the Nature Trust of New
Brunswick.
Mr. Paul
Donahue is a long time resident of Milltown Heights, St. Stephen,
N.B.,
married to Joan (Murphy) of Saint John who is an employee of the
Atlantic
Health Sciences Corporations. They have one son, Aaron.
Mr.
Donahue is a St. Stephen High School graduate. He worked for a year
gaining
business experience then went to NBIT Teacher Training (Commercial) in
Moncton, N.B. After teaching for two years, he went on to University of
Maine to complete his degree then on to UNB to complete the one-year
BEd
program. Mr. Donahue taught at Eastern Charlotte Regional High School,
James M. Hill High School in Chatham, and the New Brunswick Community
College
in St. Andrews before coming to teach at St. Stephen High School.
He has a total of thirty years teaching experience and will retire as
of
June 30, 2001. At SSHS, Mr. Donahue was staff advisor for the
yearbook
for a number of years.
Mr.
Donahue was involved in the NBTA District 23 (St. Stephen Branch) as
Treasurer,
Vice President and President. He was also Chairman of the local
Professional
Development Committee. Mr. Donahue is involved with the Meals on Wheels
program. He was a Board member for the Charlotte County Museum and is
presently
Chairman of the Charlotte County Mental Health Association. Mr.
Donahue
enjoys meeting other people and helping those in need, particularly
senior
citizens.
Mr. Dan
Harrington, a Saint John native, has lived in Charlotte County for
over 12 years. He and his wife Mary McCann reside in Crocker Hill, N.B.
with their 3 children where Mary operates St. Stephen Physiotherapy.
Dan
is a graduate of the University of New Brunswick and the University of
British Columbia where he completed a graduate degree in Regional &
Community Planning.
Prior
to his current position of Manager of the South West Solid Waste
Commission
Dan spent a number of years in the banking and consulting industries.
In
addition, he has been active in a number of professional, community and
school organizations. Currently Dan is serving as a trustee of the
Ganong
Nature Park and chairs their Management Plan Committee.
Dan’s
‘spare time’ passion is basketball and since his knees are weakened
from
old age he now coaches. Having coached teams from mini to high school
he
spent the last two seasons coaching at the St. Stephen Middle School.
Mr. Katsuji
Haya was born in British Columbia having spent most of his youth in
the Vancouver area. He received both his Bachelor and Doctorate
degrees
from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of British
Columbia.
Mr. Kaya spent three years at the University of London, London England
and 1½ years at Kansas University, Lawrence, Kansas doing
medical
research. In 1978 he moved to St. Andrews after accepting a
position
as a scientist with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans at the
Biological
Station. He continued to work for DFO and currently is head of a
research team concerned with the effects of human activities on
fisheries
resources and the marine environment. Mr. Haya is married and
raised
a daughter and two sons in St. Andrews.
Mr.
Haya contributed to his children’s recreational activities by serving
on
the executive of the St. Andrews’ Figure Skating Club, St. Andrews’
Minor
Hockey and Algonquin Golf Club (Junior Coordinator). His longest
commitment has been the ten years as treasurer of the St. Andrews’
Minor
Hockey Association. He has also managed and coached a number of
baseball,
hockey, basketball, and golf teams for local organizations and Sir
James
Dunn Academy.
Mr. Dale
E. Lively was born in Nova Scotia in 1936 (Feb 4) and moved to St.
Andrews with his wife, of 40 years, Dixie in 1976. He has 3 grown
children and 5 grandchildren. Mr. Lively has retired from the
RCMP
and as a local business owner. He is currently president of
Livelea
Enterprises Ltd., is a member of the Management Committee, The Health
Centre
Inc., is the Director of the RCMP Veterans Association, National and
Provincial
Boards, is a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, is Honourary
Aide-de-Comp
to Provincial Lieutenant Governor; The Honourable Marilyn
Trenholm-Counsell,
and is the Chairman of the Business Improvement Corporation St.
Andrews,
NB. Mr. Lively is also a licensed Private Investigator in the
Province
of New Brunswick. He was the former President of the St. Andrews
Chamber of Commerce and New Brunswick Section of Atlantic Provinces
Chamber
of Commerce. His hobbies are gardening and travel.
Mr. Fraser
McMullin originates from Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Upon completion of
University her moved to Pennfield to pursue his career, and to raise
his
two sons. Mr. McMullin has been an educator in Charlotte County for 23
years. Much of his career had been dedicated to the principalship of
Blacks
Harbour School. Mr. McMullin is an avid road cyclist and long distance
swimmer. He also enjoys time spent with his personal hobby of
woodworking.
Ms. Barb
Rayner grew up in southeast England and decided at the age of 14
she
wanted to become a journalist. She landed a job as a cub reporter on
the
local paper straight out of high school and by the time she was 21 had
also completed all the necessary college courses as well.
She
worked on various weekly and evening papers in England before
immigrating
to Canada in 1974. Her first seven years on this side of the Atlantic
were
spent in Newfoundland then she moved to St. George. Since coming to
Canada
she has worked for various newspapers and radio stations with the last
nine years at the St. Croix Courier.
A former
school board trustee and a member of the now defunct St. George Rotary
Club she is the divorced mother of two sons - Ben, a journalist who is
the pop music critic for the Toronto Star, and Duncan, a political
scientist
who is working for a public relations firm in Ottawa.
Ms.
Margaret
Raymonde (Ray) Peterson was born in Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Scotland,
and
moved to Canada with her parents in 1946. She was educated at
Carleton
University in Ottawa, receiving a B.Sc and then a M.Sc. in Biology in
1966
and 1968 respectively. In 1991 she gained a Certificate in
Voluntary
and Non-profit Sector Management from U.N.B. and the Canadian
Centre
for Philanthropy. In addition, she received a LLB from U.N.B. in
1999 and became a member of the NB Bar in 2000. Ms. Peterson has
been employed as a teacher at the UNCC; as a contract researcher in
biological
sciences at the Federal Biological Station and at the Atlantic Salmon
Federation;
as the director at Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre; and as an
articling
clerk for Denyse Smart. She served on the District 10 School
Board
form 1989 to 1992 and as Mayor of St. Andrews from 1992 to 1995.
Ms. Peterson is Past President elect of the Kiwanis Club of St. Andrews
and a member of the Board of Directors of Charlotte County Housing Inc.
Mrs.
Margaret
Anne (Peggy) Saunders was born brought up and educated in the
USA.
She has since become a Canadian citizen. She and her husband came
to Canada in 1956 and to St. Andrews in 1960. He husband (Dick)
was
a scientist at the Biological Station. Mrs. Saunders has three
children.
Over the years she has volunteered at church and other organizations,
primarily
the Ross Memorial Library (formally the St. Andrews Library) serving as
a volunteer, Board member, employee and again as a Board member.
She was also on the Regional Library Board. Her most recent involvement
is with Hospice of Charlotte where she is presently Chairman of the
Board.
Ms. Mary
Wobma was born in Blacks Harbour and moved to St. Andrews in 1981
with
her husband Keith and their children Shauna and Troy. She is
currently
employed at the Atlantic Salmon Federation as an Administrative
Assistant/
Finance and Human Resource Administrator. She has always been
involved
as a volunteer in her community in one form or another. Ms. Wobma
coached junior volleyball at the Sir James Dunn Academy and has been
involved
in the Girl Guide organization as a leader and later as an auxiliary
member.
She participated in the fund raising efforts to build the community
tennis
courts. She served on the Town Council as Deputy Mayor for 3
years
and as a councilor for 1½ years. Ms. Wobma continues to
work
raising monies for Canada Day fireworks and is very involved with her
church
community. She enjoys music, gardening, tennis and volleyball.
Ms. Leslie
Cuthbertson, Executive Director was born in Montreal, Quebec, and
moved
to Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1980 to study Forestry at the
University
of New Brunswick. After completing her B.Sc. Forestry degree in 1985
she
began working in the non-profit sector for Conservation Council of New
Brunswick. She continued her work in the non-profit environmental field
as Executive Director of a Vancouver-based environmental group, and
returned
to New Brunswick to work for the Atlantic Environmental Network. This
led
her to other work in the field of environmental consulting with Jacques
Whitford Inc., and later more general consulting assignments in a broad
diversity of fields, with a Montreal based firm, Tardif, Murray and
Associates
Inc. In 1994, Ms. Cuthbertson, her husband Rob Rainer, and two children
moved to St. Andrews. While working part-time and raising her children,
Ms. Cuthbertson volunteered on the Vincent Massey Elementary School
Parent
Advisory Committee. She became involved with Fundy Community Foundation
as part-time Executive Director in 1999.
